First Congregational Receives Leadership Award

Event Date:
Monday, June 13, 2011 - 1:00pm - Tuesday, June 28, 2011 - 1:00pm

On Monday evening, June 6, our church was awarded the Organization of the Year award by Fair Wisconsin, at a ceremony in the lobby of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. In the program booklet, part of what was said about the church is the following: First Congregational has been a long time leader and an affirming voice that continues to move LGBT inclusion from acceptance to celebration…. First Congregational has continually proven itself a role model to other faith communities by developing new and innovative outreach efforts.

Sue Jones and Jeanne Marshall accepted the award on behalf of the church. In her remarks of acceptance, Jeanne said she joined the church because she wanted a place where she could be a strong ally and join other like-minded folks.

She said she particularly appreciated the Rainbow Banner hanging in the sanctuary, which we carry every year in the Pride parade, and which has the words: Embracing Diversity Among God’s People. She wants everyone to know that 2012 will be the 20th anniversary of our church becoming Open and Affirming.

In part of her remarks, Sue Jones said: I kept coming back to First Congregational UCC not only for the genuine welcome and spiritual growth opportunities inside the church walls, but also because this faith community does its best to be a faithful witness and live out the gospel, the good news of Jesus, in the community. From working on race relations, civil rights and fair housing in the 1960's to today’s actions for workers’ rights, AIDS prevention and care, and marriage equality, witness is important.
